London man identified as victim in Sparta homicide

A London man has been identified as the victim involved in a New Year’s Day shooting in Central Elgin County.

Late Monday afternoon, Detective Inspector Jennifer Patton of the West Region OPP confirmed 35-year-old Christopher Robert Roy died from injuries sustained during an incident at a Sparta home Saturday evening. Patton said a post-mortem exam was conducted on Roy on Sunday at University Hospital in London.

Just before 7 p.m. on January 1, OPP officers were called to a property on North Street in Sparta for a reported shooting. Emergency crews located Roy, and he was taken to the London Health Sciences Centre by EMS, where he died.

Following his death, police announced second-degree murder charges against 36-year-old Devon Vandendriessche of Central Elgin. He remains in police custody and is expected to appear in court on Friday.
