St. Thomas resident charged after SUV crashes down embankment

Careless driving charges have been laid after an SUV went down an embankment north of Aylmer.

The vehicle was on Imperial Road, north of Yorke Line, in Malahide Township around 7:15 a.m. on Tuesday when it left the road and ended up down a grassy embankment. The SUV narrowly avoided going into a stream, instead coming to rest on the bank of the waterway.

The driver and lone occupant of the vehicle was not hurt.

Retrieving the SUV took extra time as tow operators required a rotator, a piece of equipment with a crane-like arm that can rotate 360 degrees, to lift the vehicle back onto the road.

A 28-year-old from St. Thomas has been charged with one count of careless driving.

“The Elgin County OPP remind motorists that driving requires the driver’s full undivided attention and if feeling fatigued to take a break,” police said following the collision.
