Argentina beats France in penalties to capture World Cup

Argentina beat France in penalties to capture the World Cup in what some are dubbing one of the greatest matches of all time.

It looked as though Argentina had the win in their hands before France turned the table with two goals in just over 90 seconds.

Both sides scored in extra time and the game was destined for penalty kicks.

Emiliano Martinez, the Argentinian goal keeper, proved to be the deciding factor as France was unable to beat him when it mattered most.

Argentina has now won the World Cup three times, while France failed in its attempt to become the the first team to repeat as champions since 1962.

World Cup champion Lionel Messi will add the coveted trophy to his collection.
