Police say they have taken one man into custody following an 18-hour stand off in northwest Woodstock.
Officers were called about a “weapons related incident” in the area of Devonshire and Vansittart avenues around 9 p.m. on Tuesday. When they arrived on scene, a man barricaded himself inside of an apartment, police said.
Negotiators were brought in to help bring a peaceful end to the standoff. At around 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, investigators confirmed a 40-year-old Woodstock man was taken into custody.
The accused is charged with possession of a dangerous weapon, assault with a weapon and mischief.
The area has since been reopened and police say there is no threat to public safety. The investigation remains ongoing.
Police spent Tuesday evening and most of Wednesday trying to talk the man out of the unit no success. On Wednesday morning, officers with the Waterloo Regional Police Emergency Response Unit arrived on scene to assist.
“With these types of investigations the Woodstock Police Service receives assistance from other services to assist in resolving the situation,” said Woodstock police Inspector Marci Shelton. “Waterloo Regional Emergency Response Unit has been on scene assisting with our investigation since approximately 7:30 a.m.”
Oxford Road 17 at Vansittart Avenue, Devonshire Avenue at Light Street, and Vansittart Avenue at Vincent Street was closed and the public was asked to keep away from the area during the investigation.
The Woodstock Police Service is thanking the public for their cooperation in the matter.
