Police call $500K house fire in Blackfriars ‘suspicious’

London police and fire officials investigating a house fire in the city’s Blackfriars neighbourhood believe the blaze may have been intentionally set.

Firefighters were called to the fully-involved fire at a home at the corner of Blackfriars and Albion streets around 4:50 p.m. on Thursday.

Crews arrived to find heavy smoke coming out of the residence and opted to take an offensive approach to tackle the blaze.

Three residents managed to escape unharmed before firefighters arrived.

The fire was out before 6 p.m. and crews remained on the scene to vent smoke from the home and put out the remaining hot spots.

No injuries were reported, but damage is estimated at approximately $500,000.

“The fire was deemed to be suspicious in nature and the investigation was assigned to members of the LPS Street Crime Unit, with the assistance of the London Fire Department and the Office of the Fire Marshal,” police said on Friday morning.

Anyone with information about the blaze is asked to call police at 519-661-5670 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
