Staff absence high at Listowel Wingham Hospitals

The Listowel Wingham Hospitals Alliance Board of Directors is concerned about the increasing number of COVID-19 patients combined with fewer staff available.

The board was briefed on the sixth wave of COVID-19 at their meeting last week. A summary of the board meeting said both hospitals are also experiencing more staff illness and absence than at any other time period of the pandemic.

The board was told predictions forecast the 6th wave of COVID to result in similar acute care occupancy levels to those experienced in late January and early February.  The board is expecting peak acute care occupancy from COVID-19 to occur within the next few weeks.

During the previous peak, hospitals ceased surgeries and ambulatory care services following provincial orders in order to have enough staff to care for the influx.
