It’s time to settle
If the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) and the federal government do not reach a contract settlement before May 22, we may experience another postal strike.
The Canadian Federation of Small Business claims its members suffered $1.6 billion in losses from the 2024 strike. A survey of these small businesses shows that 73 per cent intend to reduce usage of Canada Post, which is not good.

To exacerbate the situation, Canada Post has lost $2.2 billion during the past five years and is supposed to operate independently from the government.
It would be so patriotic for CUPW to compromise and settle now so senior governments can attend to the serious pressures U.S. President Donald Trump is exerting on Canada.

Where is the U.K.?
Is Canada not a Commonwealth nation?
If so, where has Great Britain been while U.S. President Donald Trump has run off his mouth about making Canada the 51st U.S. state?
Where has our governor-general been? Is she not the representative we pay (and who just received a $15,000 raise) to represent the Crown?
When Great Britain was under threat from the Nazi regime, were we not the first country to send our men and women to defend them at a terrible cost of lives?
I think Great Britain needs to step up and let Trump know Canada is a Commonwealth nation and hands off. If not, why do we still have the governor-general if we have to make it on our own without support?

Seeking change
Whoever wants my vote for the upcoming federal election will promise either the elimination or scaling back of the governor-general position. For a mostly symbolic title, this is a huge waste of taxpayers’ money.
This position pays $378,000 a year, allows for several hundred thousand dollars during five years as a clothing allowance, a mansion in which to live funded by Canadians, a pension anyone of us would love and an expense budget for travel beyond belief. Oh yes, and an expense account for life.
And for what?
I have to question the validity of this role and the impact to Canadians if it was eliminated.
At some point, this needs to be examined and the responsibilities of this position absorbed elsewhere within the government.

Buy Canadian
Postmedia should not be purchasing the word search on the puzzles page from Australia, which at least uses the same spelling as Canada, or the regular crossword from the U.S., with wrong spelling and irrelevant references.
For the same reasons, you should not be running the LA or New York Times crosswords in Canada.
I would suggest only using Canadian-produced puzzles products, like the ones by Gwen Sjogren. Thank you.
