Damage pegged at $5M after fire at London-area pot producer

A fire that ripped through at a cannabis growing facility located in a former elementary school east of London caused $5 million damage, provincial police say.

Emergency crews responded Monday around 7:30 p.m. to a fire at a commercial building at 17406 Evelyn Dr. in Thorndale, Middlesex OPP said Wednesday.

Nobody was injured in the fire at the building housing JC Green, a licensed pot producer that set up shop in the former Lesboro elementary school that shuttered in 2009.

Damage is estimated at $5 million, the OPP said.

Police closed off a section of Evelyn Drive between Heritage and Purple Hill roads while firefighters spent several hours battling the blaze. Investigators from the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office and the Ministry of Labour are assisting in the investigation.

JC Green didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment on Wednesday.

Founded in 2016, the privately owned company operates a 20,000-square-foot growing facility located on a 10-acre farm, according to the company’s LinkedIn profile.
