Police investigating after pedestrian killed in overnight hit-and-run

St. Thomas police are asking for help identifying a vehicle involved in an alleged hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian early Saturday.

Emergency crews responded just before 1:30 a.m. to a collision involving a pedestrian at the intersection of Sunset Road and Fingal Line, where a 34-year-old was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died, police said.

The driver of the vehicle involved in the collision didn’t remain at the scene, said police, who as of Saturday afternoon hadn’t identified the deceased.

Police released a short video clip of the suspect’s vehicle and were asking anyone who was in the area around the time of the fatal crash, including anyone with dashboard-camera or surveillance video, to contact St. Thomas police at 519-631-1224.

An Oakville man faces charges after police arrested a wanted man in St. Thomas and seized a handgun.

St. Thomas police assisted the Ontario Provincial Police Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement (ROPE) squad in arresting a suspect who was believed to be in a vehicle with a gun on Friday, police said.

Officers seized a loaded handgun from under the rear passenger seat of the vehicle, police said.

An Oakville man, 39, is charged with seven gun-related offences including possession of firearm contrary to a probation order, careless storage of a firearm, possession of a prohibited or restricted weapon and unauthorized possession of a firearm.

The ROPE squad is a multi-agency task force responsible for locating parolees unlawfully at large and prisoners who escape custody.
