A man charged in a homicide at Circle R Ranch was arrested for impaired driving in London less than an hour before a body was found at the Delaware summer camp.

London police arrested Nicholas Russell-Ewanation, 28, of Middlesex Centre, around 8:15 a.m. on May 27 near Bostwick and Whancliffe roads and charged him with impaired driving, a police spokesperson said Friday.

Forty-five minutes later, a sudden death was reported at Circle R Ranch, at 3017 Carriage Rd. in Delaware.

Provincial police classified the death as a homicide and charged Russell-Ewanation with second-degree murder in the death of Barry Ewanation. No cause of death has been released.

Court records allege Russell-Ewanation, whose home address is listed as the Delaware ranch, was impaired by alcohol, drugs or both at the time of his arrest.

Circle R Ranch’s general manager called the death “a tragic incident,” but said it wasn’t related to the business.

“Circle R Ranch has been a cherished place for outdoor education and recreation for many years. The safety and well-being of our campers, participants, staff, and the community have always been and remain our highest priorities,” general manager Nigel Tracey said in a statement.

Circle R, which opened in 1966, features outdoor activities from horseback riding and canoeing to archery and cross-country skiing on a sprawling 89-hectare (220-acre) property bordered by the Dingman Creek watershed.

After the homicide – Middlesex County’s second this year – the Thames Valley District school board cancelled all planned field trips to the ranch for the week.
