The Bayfield Marina reached a significant milestone this year.
For the fifteenth consecutive year the Marina has been awarded the Blue Flag.
Bluewater Planning Coordinator Lyndsay Whalen says the Blue Flag is an internationally recognized and respected award.
“It is awarded annually for marinas and beaches that meet strict criteria. So the criteria is under four categories, Environmental, Education and Information, Safety and Services, Water Quality and Environmental Management,” Whalen shared.
Whalen says it’s an honour to win the award anytime and it’s a huge honour to win it for the fifteenth consecutive year.
What the Blue Flag means to visitors to the Marina is that they can be confident the Marina is clean, is managed sustainably and meets the safety criteria. And people visiting various marinas look for that Blue Flag.
“It’s good for tourism. The Swim, Drink, Fish web site had noted that a Blue Flag status can mean up to two million dollars in tourism revenue to the recipients, so it’s worth all the hard effort that the community members and staff and organizations put in,” added Whalen.
Whalen says the residents of Bayfield and of Bluewater want to do whatever they can to encourage tourism and flying the Blue Flag is one way to do that.
