Wellington Street downtown to close overnight

A section of Wellington Street in downtown London will be off limits to drivers for a roughly six hour period Friday.

The temporary closure of the main artery between King and Horton streets will begin at midnight and last until 6 a.m. This is to allow crews to activate temporary traffic signals at the Wellington and York Street intersection.

“During this time, drivers travelling northbound and southbound along this section of Wellington Street will be detoured around the closure using Richmond Street. Motorists travelling east and west on York Street will be directed to Waterloo and Clarence Streets,” city officials said in a statement.

Signage is in place to help guide drivers around the temporary closure. Pedestrians will still be able to pass through the area during the construction, but are encouraged to use other nearby streets instead.

Wellington from York Street to just north of the Thames River has been torn up with just one lane of traffic allowed in each direction since March. Those lane restrictions will remain after the temporary closure early Friday.

The work being completed is for Phase 1 of the bus rapid transit (BRT) Wellington Gateway. Once completed the Wellington Gateway will be the third rapid transit corridor to be constructed in London adding dedicated bus lanes and enhanced transit stops to streets. It is being built in four phases between 2023 and 2027. Phase 1 construction isn’t expected to be completed until December.
