The Beth Ezekiel Synagogue will hold a Yom Hashoah service this weekend to honour the victims of the Holocaust.
Yom Hashoah, known in English as Holocaust Remembrance Day, is a day to remember those who lost their lives in the historic genocide. It is also a chance to celebrate the heroism of Holocaust survivors, rescuers, and liberators.
This is the first time Beth Ezekiel Synagogue has welcomed to public to a service in its sanctuary.
The event will include poetry and writings by those who experienced the Holocaust first-hand, “giving voice to their words,” according to Synagogue President Jeff Elie.
“This is intended this to be a personal journey,” Elie said. “We will set the stage, but those in attendance will be left to ponder their own questions – Why? How? – because words are just not adequate for something of this scale.”
Guests are welcome to Beth Ezekiel Synagogue, located at 313 11th Street East, to observe Yom Hashoah on Sunday, April 16. The service begins at 1 p.m. and doors open a half hour early.
