Local police officer not facing charges following SIU investigation

An Owen Sound Police Service officer is not facing charges following a Special Investigations Unit investigation of a recent arrest.

The SIU was called in to investigate following an arrest on December 16, 2022 just after 4 a.m. An Owen Sound Police officer spotted a 23-year-old man who was allegedly in violation of a release curfew condition. The officer approached the man and told them they were under arrest, but the man allegedly ignored the officer and walked away.

A struggle ensued as the officer tried to place the man under arrest, and during the altercation, the officer punched the man two or three times in the face. Another officer arrived on-scene and placed the man under arrest. The officers took the man to the Owen Sound Police station, and then took the man to local hospital, where it was determined the man suffered a fractured right orbital bone.

After assessing the evidence, SIU Director Joseph Martino determined that there was “no reasonable grounds to believe that an officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the man’s arrest and injury,” according to a release from the SIU. The case has now been closed by the SIU.
