Flood watch continues with more rain in the forecast

With additional rain expected on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday this week, the Lower Thames River Conservation Authority (LTVCA) warns that water levels are likely to continue rising, which could lead to more flooding in certain areas.

Following a rainstorm that brought significant rainfall to the region, weather forecasts are calling for more with 10 to 20 millimeters expected between Monday and Tuesday and another 10 to 15 mm on Wednesday.

“River levels are already high enough that flooding is occurring in the low-lying, mostly agricultural, river flats adjacent to the river from Delaware down to Chatham,” read a statement from LTVCA. “As the peak works its way downstream, river levels will continue to rise but are not expected to flood the upper tablelands.”

LTVCA predicts that water levels will peak around Dutton on Monday, Thamesville on Tuesday, and in Chatham overnight into Wednesday.

When the peak reaches Chatham, the conservation authority advises that the 6th Street Backwater Dam and Pumping Station may be utilized.

Businesses along King Street that are situated by the river in downtown Chatham could experience flooding on Tuesday.

“People should take extra caution and avoid the river, ditches, and streams.  The combination of slippery banks, and fast moving cold water can be dangerous,” the conservation authority added. “Standing water can also present its own unseen hazards. Children, pets and livestock should be kept away from the water.”

LTVCA also warns that riverbanks and flood-prone low-lying areas are unsafe for taking shelter.

The message will remain in effect until Thursday.
