A serious crash that sent two people to hospital minutes after a convenience store robbery in northeast London is being investigated by Ontario’s police watchdog.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was called in following the crash on Adelaide Street North between Windermere Road and Huron Street Sunday night.
In the lead up to the collision, London police were called about a robbery in progress at a convenience store on Kipps Lane east of Adelaide shortly after 8:15 p.m. By the time police arrived the suspects had taken off, but a description of them and the getaway vehicle were provided to officers.
Police spotted the suspect vehicle in the area of Adelaide and Victoria Street soon after and attempted to stop it. The vehicle did not stop and ended up colliding with two other vehicles.
One of the suspects and a passenger in one of the other vehicles suffered serious, non-life threatening injuries in the crash. Both were taken to hospital for treatment.
Two other suspects and another person from the other vehicle suffered minor injuries.
Three people, described by police as “male youths” were arrested.
The investigation is ongoing, police said.
The SIU was notified about the incident due to the police interaction prior to the crash. It has invoked its mandate and will be investigating. The independent government agency probes incidents involving police that have resulted in death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
