Several soft cheeses recalled due to possible link to illness outbreak

An investigation into a foodborne illness outbreak has prompted the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) to recall two brands of soft and semi-soft surface-ripened cheese.

The products being pulled from store shelves include Le Fromage au Village and La Vache à Maillotte brand Mélo-Dieux, Angelus, Le Casimir, and Le Cendré de Notre-Dame cheese. The national food inspection agency believes the cheeses may have been contaminated with Listeria.

“There have been reported illnesses that may be associated with the consumption of these products. Further lab testing is underway to confirm the link,” the agency said in a statement.

The affected cheeses range in size from 150g to 200g to 275g packages and were sold in Ontario, Quebec, online and may have also been distributed nationally.

Anyone with these cheeses in their refrigerator is advised not to eat it and should either toss it into the garbage or return it to the store where it was purchased.

Food contaminated with Listeria may not look or smell spoiled, but can still make you sick, according to the CFIA. Symptoms of Listeria infection include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache, and neck stiffness. Pregnant women, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk.
