Mac Neil sets another world record, now holds two

Just days after Maggie Mac Neil improved her existing world record in the 50-metre backstroke, the London swimmer has set the world’s fastest time in the women’s 100-m butterfly.

On Sunday, she dominated in the 100-m butterfly finals and set a new world record time of 54.05 seconds. Previously, the record belonged to American swimmer Kelsi Dahlia with her time of 54.59 seconds. Mac Neil shattered that mark by more than half a second.

“It means so much. There were so many incredible swims and records broken this week but to end 2022 on such a high note is amazing,” she said.

Mac Neil’s record-setting performances happened at the FINA World Swimming Championships, which were held in Melbourne, Australia. The meet ran from December 13 to 18.

On Friday, Mac Neil swam in the 50-m backstroke and improved her personal best to 25.25 seconds, bettering the world record by 0.02 seconds. She finished first in the 50-m backstroke, 50-m butterfly, and 100-m butterfly at this year’s short-course championships.

Mac Neil previously held the Canadian record in the 100-m butterfly with a best time of 54.78 seconds, which she swam this past October in Toronto. The swimmer said she has been eyeing the world record ever since.

Mac Neil was named Best Female Swimmer of the Meet with her three individual gold medals, two world records, and three relay bronzes.

Canadian athletes brought home a total of 14 medals from the 2022 FINA World Swimming Championships. Swimming Canada says this is the country’s second-best showing of all time, falling one medal short from last year.
