Huron County’s Warden has some concerns about the province’s More Homes Built Faster Act, but he also believes the legislation does recognize the desperate need for housing throughout Ontario.
Glen McNeil said he suspects most of the changes will impact larger urban centres more, but said it’s too early to say how much things like waiving or capping development charges will have on rural municipalities.
“We will see where that lands. I think that the directive was more towards larger cities, however, we will wait and see as more information comes forward as to how that will effect a municipality like A-C-W,” said McNeil.
McNeil said he’s also not sure how much the new legislation will override municipal zoning regulations.
“It is a consideration and it is also a concern if in fact that happens, however, I think it’s premature to see whether this will effect all municipalities equally or whether the larger cities will be more affected by it than smaller municipalities,” said McNeil.
McNeil pointed out there is no question more housing is needed, but he’s also hoping that can be done with minimal negative impact on small municipalities.
