$38K in drugs seized, five Huron County residents charged

Police have charged a group of people after a drug bust in Vanastra turned up nearly $40,000 worth of suspected opioids and meth.

On Thursday, Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), along with the Huron-Perth Community Street Crime Unit, and West Region Emergency Response Team conducted search warrants at two homes in Vanastra.

During the searches, officers found unspecified quantities of fentanyl, hydromorphone, and methamphetamine. Police said the combined total of the drugs seized have an estimated street value of $38,480.

In addition to the substances found, investigators also seized a cell phone, $1,500 in Canadian cash and a number of weapons including a pellet rifle, pellet pistol, air soft pistol, ammunition, brass knuckles, various knives and throwing stars.

Police have since charged five people four men and a woman between the ages of 37-46, all of whom live in Huron East or Central Huron.

Three of the accused are charged with possession of methamphetamine, fentanyl and hydromorphone. Two are charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking.

A 46-year-old Huron East man is also charged with unauthorized possession of a weapon, possession of ammunition contrary to a prohibition order and possession of a prohibited weapon contrary to a prohibition order. A 37-year-old Central Huron man is additionally charged with breach of probation, and failing to comply with a release order.

Four of the suspects have been released with future court dates in Goderich, the 46-year-old remains in custody.
