Chain of Office stolen from London City Hall

London police are investigating after the Mayor’s Chain of Office was stolen from City Hall.

On Wednesday, a media spokesperson with the City of London confirmed the theft and said the investigation was turned over to police.

“We can confirm that the Mayor’s Chain of Office has been stolen. This has been referred to the London Police Service. Because it’s a criminal matter, we won’t be providing any additional information,” the statement read.

It is not clear when the Chain of Office went missing or if any other items from City Hall were stolen.

The Chain of Office is a piece of heavy jewelry often adorned with badges or other symbols attached, worn by the mayor during special ceremonies. The tradition of the collar follows British practice, and its use dates back to Europe from the Middle Ages.

The news of the theft comes two days after the City’s municipal election, which saw current Ward 7 councillor and Deputy Mayor Josh Morgan elected as the City’s 65th mayor.

London News Today has reached out to the police for additional information.
