SIU provides more details on south London crash

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has provided a few more details of an investigation that was launched after a stolen vehicle being pursued by officers crashed into another vehicle.

In a brief update on Tuesday, the SIU said that prior to the collision, police were investigating a break-in at around 5 a.m. Monday when they spotted a suspicious van. London police said that the vehicle had been reported stolen in the area of Pond Mills and Thompson roads around 4:50 a.m.

The SIU said that officers used spike belts to try and stop the vehicle, but the van went through the intersection of Pond Mills Road and Commissioners Road East, and crashed into another vehicle in the area.

A male driver in the civilian vehicle suffered serious injuries in the crash and the SIU said it is unknown if a woman located in the van suffered any injury. This is in contrast to the story from London police, who said two people from each vehicle were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

During the ordeal, the man driving the van ran from the scene. It has not been confirmed if the man has been apprehended yet.

The crash led to a road closure on Commissioners Road East between Frontenac Road and Deveron Crescent that lasted for several hours.

“Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. At this time, one subject official and four witness officials have been designated,” a statement issued Tuesday from the SIU read.
