A first-year Ivey student has been identified as the young woman killed in a crash near Western University earlier this week.
On Tuesday, Western University officials offered condolences to the friends and family of 21-year-old Maija Nenonen, who died after she was hit by a vehicle in a residential parking lot in the area of Western Road and Hollywood Crescent shortly after 1 p.m. Monday.
“On behalf of the entire Western community, I offer my heartfelt condolences to Maija’s family as well as to her friends, classmates and all who knew her,” said Western University President Alan Shepard in a statement Tuesday evening. “While I know that words can give little consolation at a time of deep grief, we join in mourning their loss.”
Originally from Sault Ste. Marie, Nenonen began her academic career at Western in 2018 as a Health Science student. She transferred to Ivey Business School last year. Her family shared that she had long aspired to come to London to attend Western as a teenager in high school and was proud to be a Western Mustang.
“Maija was a bright and kind student who was liked and respected by faculty and her classmates. She was a strong member of our community who gave her time generously to support others. She was co-director of Western’s Relay for Life event in support of cancer research.” a statement from Ivey read.
After the crash, London police say the driver involved remained on scene while emergency crews arrived. As of Tuesday, police continue to investigate the crash but no new information has been released.
