Fitbit watches recalled over burn hazard

Select models of a popular fitness watch have been recalled by Health Canada due to the risk of burns.

The recall involves the Fitbit Ionic fitness-oriented smartwatch.

The watch is equipped with a lithium-ion battery with an approximately four-day battery life. The Ionic has a 1.4-inch colour LCD display and is available in multiple band sizes.

The following four models are included in the recall

-Ionic slate blue/burnt orange

-Ionic charcoal/smoke grey

-Ionic blue-grey/white

-Ionic Adidas edition ink blue and ice grey/silver grey

According to Health Canada, the battery in the Ionic smartwatch can overheat, posing a burn hazard to the user.

“As of February 15, 2022, the company has received no reports of incidents or injuries in Canada or Mexico,” Health Canada said on its website. “In the United States, the company has received at least 115 reports of the battery overheating.”

The warning is a joint recall issued by Health Canada, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Mexico’s consumer protection agency PROFECO and Fitbit LLC. Anyone who owns one of the affected watches is instructed to stop using it immediately and contact Fitbit for a refund.
