Theft, drug charges laid after police foot chase in Hanover

Hanover police have laid a slew of charges against a man after a foot chase Thursday afternoon.

The series of alleged incidents leading up the the chase began at around 2:30 p.m., when officers were called about a “smash and grab” vehicle theft in the area of 10th Avenue and 6th Street.

Shortly after, police received another call from a citizen who reported seeing a man rummaging through a wallet and tossing items away on 8th Street near 10th Avenue.

At around 4:10 p.m., officers approached a male suspect walking along on 10th Street. Police say the man took off running east down the street and through traffic.

Eventually, police caught up to the man and he was arrested in front of the Bank of Montreal.

During the chase, police allege the man was seen throwing the contents of his pockets out onto the street by witnesses. Officers later located and seized a number of small bags containing suspected fentanyl.

“The lethality of fentanyl is well known and thanks to the help of a keen-eyed citizen, a tragedy may have been avoided here since even mishandling Fentanyl can lead to serious harm or death” said Deputy Chief George Hebblethwaite.

As a result, a 48-year-old man faces charges including theft under $5,000, mischief, obstruction of police, possession of stolen identity documents, and possession of a controlled substance.

The accused was taken into custody and is scheduled to appear in court by video on Monday.
