UPDATE: Poor weather conditions close portion of Hwy. 402

Lambton OPP were forced to close a portion of Highway 402 eastbound late Thursday afternoon due to poor weather conditions.

Accumulating snow and ice cover prompted police to close the roadway from Airport Road to Watford.

Multiple crashes were reported in the area, including a couple involving transport trucks. The MTO cameras showed significant delays.

“The roads are extremely icy and they’re slippery right now,” said Acting OPP Sgt. Ed Sanchuk over Twitter.

Earlier in the day, Sanchuk urged motorists to take their time and adjust their driving habits.

“Drive according to the road and weather conditions,” he said. “We need people to make it home safely to their families.”

Elsewhere, the OPP announced another closure just after 6 p.m. along the 402 on the westbound side between Oil Heritage Road and Mandaumin Road due to a crash. A short time later, police closed the eastbound side of the 402 at Mandaumin Road at Indian Road for a crash.

At around 11:30 p.m., OPP tweeted about a crash resulting in another closure of all westbound lanes of the 402 between Forest Road and Oil Heritage Road.

More information will be released as it becomes available.
