Norfolk County house fire leaves one in critical condition

Fire officials are continuing to probe the cause of a house fire in Waterford that has left one person fighting for life.

Emergency crews were called to the burning home on Sylvia Street around 5:40 p.m. on Saturday. When Norfolk OPP arrived they found the second floor of the home engulfed in flames.

“One of the occupants of the home was being treated by paramedics when officers were made aware that a second person was still inside the residence,” said Acting Sergeant Ed Sanchuk. “Officers entered the home and located an individual on the second floor, who was subsequently rescued and brought outside.”

That individual was taken to a local hospital before being airlifted to a Toronto hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Firefighters were able to stop the fire from spreading to other nearby homes.

A damage estimate has not been provided.

The Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal will be assisting with the investigation into the cause of the fire, Sanchuk said.
