River that would take salmon effluent hasn't been assessed since 2013
MONTPELIER, Ohio — The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency revealed at a public hearing Wednesday night that it has drafted a permit to allow up to 4.4 million gallons of treated effluent from a genetically modified salmon operation into the east branch of the St. Joseph River someday, even though it hasn’t assessed the existing quality of that waterway for 12 years.

EPA 2026 budget cuts target clean water programs
President Donald Trump’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lee Zeldin was clear when he released the agency’s new mission statement in February. A top priority will be “clean air, land and water for every American,” Zeldin said, when he announced, “Powering the Great American Comeback.”
In early June the EPA released its fiscal year 2026 budget.
