Ann Arbor “Public Power” petition promised after study voted down

Organizers with the group “Ann Arbor for Public Power” say they’re planning a ballot petition campaign with hopes to reach the ballot in 2026. The Ann Arbor city council at its Monday night meeting rejected a proposal to spend nearly two million dollars on a feasibility study regarding the creation of a city-owned utility network. Some councilmembers who voted “no” said they’re concerned about spending the money for the study in the face of ongoing federal budget cuts by the Trump administration.
