The recent heat wave is taking its toll on western Lake Erie, where many fish, mayflies, quagga mussels, and other aquatic critters, including shrimp-like crustaceans known as amphipods, have suffocated to death or are at risk of dying because water near the lake bottom suddenly lost so much oxygen.
