University sports on pause due to COVID-19

Ontario University Athletics (OUA) has put a pause on university sport effective immediately.

“OUA programming (scrimmages, exhibition games, tournaments, league competition, championships), which was originally scheduled to start back up on January 6th, will commence no earlier than Monday, January 24th,” the organization said in a release.

“The OUA and its Board of Directors want to assure student-athletes and coaches that every effort will be made to deliver sport in the winter, all while keeping the health and safety of all OUA stakeholders at the forefront of any decisions,” the release continued.

OUA advised that it will continue to assess the state of the COVID-19 pandemic and will extend the pause beyond January 24th if necessary.

Both Western University and the University of Windsor recently announced that the upcoming semester would shift to virtual learning in an effort to keep staff and students safe amidst the rise of COVID-19 cases.
