Driver seriously hurt in 401 crash west of London

A driver is in hospital with life threatening injuries following a two-vehicle crash on Highway 401 west of London.

Emergency crews were called to the eastbound lanes of the highway east of Union Road in Southwold Township after a cube van rear-ended a tractor trailer just before 6 a.m. Wednesday. The force of the crash caused the van to become wedged under the back of the transport.

A person had to be cut from the wreckage by Southwold firefighters. Officials stated the extrication was “very difficult.”

One of the drivers was taken to hospital with injuries described as life-threatening, while the other was not hurt, Elgin OPP said.

All eastbound lanes between Union Road and Colonel Talbot Road are closed while police investigate the cause of the collision and clear debris. The lanes are expected to remain closed throughout the morning. Drivers are asked to avoid the area.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call police at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-84777 (TIPS).
