Portable defibrillator snatched from St. Thomas park

St. Thomas police are calling on the person or persons who swiped an automated external defibrillator (AED) from a city park to return it.

The life-saving device was stolen from Burwell Park over the long weekend, police said on Monday.

AEDs dramatically increase a heart attack victim’s chance of survival when administered shortly after a cardiac arrest. The device sends an electric current to the heart, allowing it to re-establish a normal rhythm. The portable machines typically cost about $2,000 each.

“We are encouraging the person responsible to return this life saving piece of equipment,” police said.

Anyone with information about the theft is also asked to call police at 519-631-1224 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
