Colorado low bringing heavy rain to parts of southwestern Ontario

Thursday is likely to be a soggy day across most of southwestern Ontario, prompting Environment Canada to issue a weather advisory.

On Wednesday, the weather agency issued a special weather statement for a significant rainfall event expected to begin Thursday afternoon across parts of Windsor-Essex, Chatham-Kent, Sarnia-Lambton, London-Middlesex, Elgin and Oxford counties, as well as Perth, and Grey counties.

“Light showers and drizzle will give way to rain, heavy at times, Thursday afternoon and then change to snow after midnight Thursday night,” read a statement from Environment Canada.

Meteorologists say that the 15-30 millimetres of rainfall could lead to possible flooding, as the partially frozen ground may not easily absorb the extra precipitation. The weather agency said several centimetres of snow may also be seen in some areas by Friday morning

“Considerable uncertainty remains regarding the track of the Colorado low responsible for this rainfall. Should the track of this low change, rainfall amounts could also change,” the advisory noted.

The system is expected to taper off by Friday.
