Fanshawe drops new ‘Quaran-2unes’ playlist

A second year of pandemic lockdowns and cancelled events and festivals didn’t stop Fanshawe College music students and alumni from creating an array of new music.

The college’s music industry arts (MIA) and audio post-production programs released another quarantine inspired playlist on Tuesday. Dubbed ‘Quaran-2unes’, the latest playlist available on Spotify features 63 songs from 31 current students and alumni artists. The music on the playlist was all created throughout 2021, the second year of the global COVID-19 pandemic.

“When the pandemic hit it was devastating. I had some of the biggest gigs of my career cancelled, but I have always found in the music business that roadblocks present opportunities and I made the best out of it,” said Jesse Slack, whose music is included on Quaran-2unes.

A graduate of Fanshawe’s MIA program, Slack signed her first deal as a songwriter in Nashville during the pandemic.

“Now with everything re-opening, I am confident there are bigger things to come as I have had the time to work on my craft and become a more authentic version of myself,” added Slack.

This is the second playlist curated by the college during the pandemic. The first, called ‘Quaran-tunes’, came out on March 17 of last year, the first anniversary of Ontario declaring a state of emergency.

“Creating this playlist is so much fun,” said Sarah Wells, the college’s social media communications officer who developed both quarantine playlists. “We get to connect with student and alumni artists and learn more about their musical journeys. We get to build an amazing playlist of radio-ready music that contributes to the sounds of our music city.”
