Bruce County promotes services for homeless people

Bruce County is raising awareness about the programs and services provided to help people who are homeless obtain housing.

Bruce County funds the YMCA Rural Housing and Homelessness Outreach to ensure safety and assess basic needs for people who don’t have a home. Staff help people secure a safe place to stay for the night while creating an action plan to find and maintain long-term sustainable housing.

As well, the universal 211 service can help people connect to community, social, health, and government services. Ontario’s 211 services are available 24/7 with resources to help vulnerable individuals access housing support after hours.

A recent snap shot survey by the county and service providers showed about 80 people in Bruce County are without housing, with about half of them were under the age of 35. Two thirds of the respondents had a mental health concern, and about 40 per cent had either a physical or learning limitation.

“Through strong partnerships, Bruce County is able to build a strong housing response system for vulnerable residents,” said Tania Dickson, Housing Services Manager. “Thank you to community organizations like YMCA and 211, and many community volunteers, for your continued support for those who are homeless or are at risk of homelessness.”

“YMCA is committed to delivering responsive services to help individuals and families obtain or maintain short-term shelter and long-term permanent housing,” said Matthew Shute, Director Community Initiatives and Employment Services.
