Although the level of of viral illnesses in Huron Perth is starting to decline, COVID-19 continues to take a toll in the area.

There are fewer lab-confirmed cases of influenza and RSV in Huron Perth. However, Huron Perth Public Health reported eight deaths due to COVID since January 1, 2023. Seven of those fatalities were associated to outbreaks at long term care homes, while one was a community-related death. The victims were between the ages of  70 and 90.

“I extend my condolences to the loved ones of these individuals,” said Medical Officer of Health Dr. Miriam Klassen. “COVID-19 remains a serious illness for some people, especially those who are older. While we are seeing signs of improvement, it is important to keep taking actions to protect those who are most vulnerable to severe outcomes from this virus.”

Public Health reported there were two active COVID-19 outbreaks in long-term care homes and one at Clinton Public Hospital. Ten people are in hospital due to the virus.

People who are over 60, or who have certain medical conditions, and those not fully vaccinated are at great risk of developing severe symptoms from COVID-19. You can project yourself from viruses by washing your hands, staying home if sick, wearing a mask, or physically distancing from others indoors. Improved air filtration also helps. People can contact public health for vaccination information.
