Highway 401 westbound lanes shut down after collision, oil spill

A section of Highway 401 westbound in London was closed down by emergency crews after a series of traffic accidents on Sunday afternoon.

West Region OPP sent out a tweet just after noon saying westbound lanes were closed between Westchester Bourne and Veteran’s Memorial Parkway due to a collision. Police said emergency crews were attending the scene.

Less than an hour later, the London Fire Department tweeted that westbound lanes on Highway 401 were closed between Highbury Avenue and Veterans Memorial Parkway, a section just west of the previous closure.

“There is a significant fuel spill from one jack knifed tractor trailer carrying fuel, this may result in a lengthy closure,” the statement read.

The fire department also said the Ministry of the Environment had been contacted.

The highway re-opened between Westchester Bourne and Veteran’s Memorial Parkway around 2:30 p.m., but no update was provided on the section affected by the fuel spill.

It is undetermined whether the collision and oil spill were related, however, both incidents occurred during a period of heavy snowfall which temporarily reduced visibility in the area.

More to come.
