Canadian Army reservists to conduct winter survival training near London

Residents west of London can expect to see a number of Canadian Army reservists in the area this weekend.

The Canadian Armed Forces is advising the public it will be conducting winter training exercises around residential areas and farm land in Lobo in Middlesex Centre on Saturday and Sunday. Military personnel will be practicing land navigation, construction of improvised shelters, making small survival fires, and overall survival in cold weather conditions. The exercises will begin at 7 a.m. on Saturday and run through the day and night, wrapping up at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

All of the activities are being conducted with the co-operation of local authorities in officially approved locations.

“Members of the public may see military vehicles and personnel participating in the exercise with unloaded weapons. No live ammunition will be present at any time,” the Canadian Armed Forces said in a statement.

Some areas could be off limits while these exercises are taking place.

The public is asked to use caution when approaching military vehicles being used in the training.

While the exercises are being conducted during what has been an unseasonably warm couple of weeks, reservists will have to contend with snow. Environment Canada is calling for periods of snow to fall throughout the day on Sunday.
