WATCH: OPP procession for Constable Greg Pierzchala

An OPP procession is headed from the Centre for Forensic Sciences in Toronto to the City of Barrie, Constable Greg Pierzchala’s home town.

Pierzchala was shot and killed on Tuesday while responding to a call about a vehicle in the ditch near Hagersville.

He had been an OPP officer for just over a year.

Two suspects were taken into police custody hours after the shooting.

Randall McKenzie, 25, of Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation, and 30-year-old Brandi Steward-Sperry of Hamilton face first-degree murder charges.

McKenzie faced numerous firearms-related offences and a charge of assaulting a peace officer. He was out on bail when he failed to appear in court last September, and police issued a warrant for his arrest.

The two will remain in custody until a court appearance on January 17, 2023.

During a media briefing on Wednesday night, OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique told reporters Pierzchala had just completed his probation with the OPP on the day of his death.

He was just 28 years old.

Pierzchala’s funeral service is on January 4, 2023. Officials could release more information about the service soon.
