Queens death won’t delay Conservative Party leadership results

The Conservative Party of Canada will announce the winner of its leadership race on Saturday after all.

There was some question whether the party would hold off in light of Queen Elizabeth’s death, but party chair Ian Brodie issued a statement Friday morning.

“The event planned to announce the results of the Conservative Party leadership race will go ahead as planned,” it said.

Brodie continued leadership convention organizers will revise the program reflecting Her Majesty’s passing.

The Conservatives expect to announce the winner at 6 p.m. Five candidates are vying for the party’s top spot. They are Jean Charest, Pierre Poilievre, Leslyn Lewis, Scott Aitchison, and Roman Baber.

The party released the final voters’ list in late July with a record 678,708 members eligible to cast a ballot.

Voters had until Tuesday to mail in their ballots. Deloitte served as the validator, and campaigns could scrutinize ballots at the processing centre in Ottawa.

Members are using a ranked ballot system where second choices are redistributed to remaining candidates until the winner surpasses 50 per cent plus one point. Each electoral district represents 100 points.
