Health Canada approves Pfizer shot for babies and pre-schoolers

Parents with children as young as six months and as old as four now have the choice of a second COVID-19 vaccine for their little ones.

Health Canada authorized the use of the Pfizer-BioNTech Comirnaty vaccine for that age group.

“After a thorough and independent scientific review of the evidence, Health Canada has determined that the benefits of this vaccine outweigh the potential risks in this age group,” read a release from the agency on Friday. “Evidence continues to indicate that the vaccines used in Canada are very effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalization, and death from COVID-19.”

Unlike the regiment for older kids, Health Canada authorized a three-dose primary series of three micrograms each. The second shot is recommended three weeks after the first, and the third would be eight weeks after the second.

Kids five to 11 get two doses of 10 micrograms each, and for those 12 and up, the recommended dose is 30 micrograms.

Pfizer-BioNTech must continue to provide Health Canada with information and efficacy of the vaccine in the younger age group. The agency will use the data for ongoing studies.

Health Canada authorized the vaccine for those 16 and up on December 9, 2020. It was approved for adolescents 12 to 15 on May 5, 2021, and for children five to 11 on November 19, 2021.
