Health unit reports 40 new COVID-19 cases

The number of active cases of COVID-19 in London and Middlesex County has climbed back above 300.

The Middlesex London Health Unit reported 40 new cases on Thursday, bringing the number of active cases in the community to 311. That figure has more than tripled in the past month.

The 40 new cases mark the highest number of new cases reported in a single day since August 21, when the health unit reported 49 new cases.

Fortunately, no deaths were reported Thursday, leaving the local pandemic death toll at 254.

The London Health Sciences Centre says it is currently caring for 13 patients with COVID-19, up by one from Wednesday. The hospital says five or fewer are listed in intensive care and five or fewer are in Children’s Hospital.

There are nine schools locally that are dealing with outbreaks – Mountsfield Public, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic, Riverside Public, St. Jude Catholic, St. Marguerite, St. Mary Choir and Orchestra, St. Nicholas Catholic, Tecumseh Public, and West Oaks French Immersion.

Southwestern Public Health reported 30 more COVID-19 cases on Thursday, increasing the local case count since the pandemic began to 5,609. Resolved cases rose to 5,305. There are now 199 active cases in the two counties.

Ontario reported its highest single day increase in new COVID-19 cases since early May. The province reported 1,290 new cases and 10 deaths Thursday.
There are 309 people with COVID being treated in Ontario hospitals. Of those, 155 are in intensive care.
Health Minister Christine Elliott says 232 of those who are hospitalized are not fully vaccinated.
