Georgian Bluff residents gain access to Owen Sound compost site

Owen Sound has opened its Leaf and Yard Waste site to residents of Georgian Bluffs in an effort to offset rising facility costs.

The compost site is located at 2450 28th Avenue East, about a 15 minute drive from the Township of Georgian Bluffs.

“We sincerely appreciate the City of Owen Sound providing this service and partnering with Georgian Bluffs to include our residents at their compost site,” said Georgian Bluffs Mayor Sue Carleton.  “As small communities it makes sense to share resources where we can with our neighbours to provide the services that are needed by and important to all residents.”

Georgian Bluffs will pay an annual fee of $26,000 to provide community members access Owen Sound’s compost depot. Friday is the first day Georgian Bluffs residents can make a drop off.

“Being collaborative and working together on issues that face us all is valuable,” said Mayor Ian Boddy of Owen Sound.  “Teaming up with our neighbours is an important example of an innovative and effective way we can work together to benefit both our community and our environment.”

The Leaf and Yard Waste site is open everyday from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Those using the facility must bring proof of address, such as a driver’s license or utility bill.

Leaves, grass clippings, small branches, logs and firewood are among the accepted materials at the compost site. A more comprehensive list can be found on the facility’s webpage.
