Jobless rate inches up in Midwestern Ontario

The unemployment rate for the Stratford-Bruce Peninsula Economic Region increased this month by 0.2 percentage points to 4.6 per cent. Meantime, the provincial rate stayed at 5 per cent.

The region lost 1,700 jobs, with 2,100 full-time losses and 400 part-time gains. The region’s labour force size decreased from 162,300 people in January 2023 to 160,700 people in February 2023.

The manufacturing sector lost 1,600 while professional, scientific and technical services experienced a major decline of 2,300 positions. Transportation and warehousing was down by 1,200. Wholesale and retail trade experienced the largest gains followed by healthcare and social assistance.

“We continue to remain one of the lowest unemployment rates in Ontario; creating a very tight labour market for our economic region” said Dana Soucie, executive director for the Four County Labour Market Planning Board. “We have analyzed the demographics that makes up the unemployment rate and released the 2022-23 report “Impacts of Low Unemployment” which can be accessed on our website at www.planningboard.ca/reports”.
