Research project examines where seniors are getting pandemic information

The University of Waterloo is working on a project that will look at health information in the context of the pandemic.

Research Assistant Sarah Versteeg explained they are specifically looking at how older adults in Southwestern Ontario are getting that information and said the sources for that information can be very limited.

“For those that have lower broadband internet or even the computer, [it’s] sometimes… not exactly something they like to use to learn more,” Versteeg said. “Whether that’s digital illiteracy or just the internet being a major barrier to that.”

For many seniors, Versteeg claimed their sources for credible information can be very limited.

“Sources of information can include things like the TV, people in your network, such as your neighbour, or family members and we’re hoping to learn more about COVID related messages and how can we make that better for communication,” she said.

Researchers are asking any seniors in the area who would like to share their experiences regarding misinformation related to COVID to give them a call at 519-721-3977.
