Closure at Lord Elgin Public School extended

Staff and students at a northeast London public school will continue to learn from home until after the Thanksgiving weekend.

According to officials with the Thames Valley District School Board (TVDSB), Lord Elgin Public School will remain closed until October 12 due to a significant number of COVID-19 cases that have grown since the school initially closed last week.

“Lord Elgin staff are committed to providing continued access to high-quality learning while the school is closed. Families requiring technology to support students to access virtual learning are asked to contact the school office,” a release from the school board read.

Students already enrolled in virtual classes are not effected by the closure.

Last Wednesday, the board closed the school after the number of active cases climbed to 11. By the end of the week, case numbers reached 15. As of Monday, nine cases have been declared resolved and another nine remain active.

No new cases of the virus were reported at Lord Elgin on Monday however, the TVDSB confirmed new positive cases at four London-area schools. Saunders S.S. in London along with Woodstock Collegiate, Northdale P.S. and Springbank P.S. in Woodstock. All schools will remain open on Tuesday.

“For all confirmed cases, families and staff at the school will be notified by letter. Local public health units will contact any close contacts directly,” a statement on the Thames Valley website reads.

As of Monday evening, there are currently 21 active COVID-19 cases at 12 TVDSB schools. More information on active cases can be found on the school board’s website.
