Adult and infant rushed to hospital after serious crash in Elgin County
The driver of an SUV and a baby are in critical condition following a crash involving a grain truck in Malahide Township according to provincial police.
At around 6:40 p.m. Thursday, Elgin County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called about a two-vehicle crash just north of Aylmer. Emergency crews in Malahide and St. Thomas responded to the scene on Lyons Line between Imperial Road and Dorchester Road.
OPP Acting Sergeant Ed Sanchuk said an SUV was travelling west on Lyons Line when the vehicle collided into the back of the grain truck.
Crews extricated two occupants, the driver and a baby, from the SUV and they were taken to a nearby hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries. The driver of the grain truck was not hurt during the crash.
“I want to say thank you to all the volunteer firefighters, paramedics and police officers currently on scene and to all the individuals who stopped to offer some type of assistance tonight. It’s sincerely appreciated,” said Sancuk “I just want to send out our sincere thoughts and prayers and condolences to the family and everyone affected by this tragedy tonight.”
Members of the West Region OPP Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement Team (TIME) remain on scene as of 10 p.m. Thursday. The area is expected to remain closed into the early hours of the morning while police investigate.
No other details have been provided.
