Strathroy man charged after standoff with police

A police officer was assaulted during a standoff with a man with a weapon in downtown Strathroy.

Strathroy-Caradoc police were called to the home in the area of Front and Caradoc streets around 6 p.m. on Wednesday after an anonymous caller said there was a man inside trying to injure people with a knife.

Officers arrived on scene and were able to get everyone except the possibly armed man out of the residence. The man was known to officers and had outstanding warrants in other jurisdictions, police said.

The OPP emergency response unit and canine unit were brought in to assist with the arrest.

One officer was assaulted with a weapon during the incident, but did not require medical treatment. No other injuries were reported.

The man was eventually arrested without further incident. He is charged with assaulting a peace officer with a weapon and will appear in London court on May 25.
